Wishing @esme.crane.eventing and Diego the very best of luck @lemieuxgrassrootschamps!

Esme is one of many local riders who’ve visited us for a final tune-up ahead of the big event. Her trainer, @janinelamy_mindsetcoach — a familiar face at Lodge Farm — shares some brilliant tips for performing at your best under pressure, whether it’s Badminton or your first unaffiliated ODE.

Janine says:
At championships, both you and your horse are technically capable — you wouldn’t be there if you weren’t. Everyone rides at a similar level, which means the real challenge is mental 🥇

You need to...

1️⃣ Focus on the process, not the outcome
➡ Don’t change what you normally do just because it’s a big competition. Stick to your trusted system — that’s what got you here. Both you and your horse perform best when working within familiar routines

2️⃣ Break it down
➡ Focus on one phase at a time. Tackling the competition in chunks prevents mental overload

3️⃣ Ride the horse you have on the day
➡ Your horse may feel brighter, tense, or different in the competition atmosphere. Adjust your plan and work with how your horse is, not how you expect him to be

4️⃣ Dressage warm-up
➡ The goal isn’t to fix issues but to present the best version of your horse. Instead of thinking “What do I need to fix?” try “How do I showcase the good work I know my horse can do?”

5️⃣ Showjumping warm-up
➡ Same principle as dressage: don’t try to improve your horse, aim to get him into the ring confident, balanced and rideable

6️⃣ Walk cross-country with a Plan B
➡ Know your lines and strategy, but also know your alternatives. This preparation reduces panic when things don’t go exactly as planned

7️⃣ Organise your gear and routines
➡ Lists and plans for settling in free up mental space for what really matters: your performance. Knowing where everything is and how you’ll settle your horse helps you stay calm and focused

8️⃣ Ride with clarity and trust
➡ Be organised and trust in the preparation that got you here. And most importantly… enjoy the experience!

Heading to Badminton? Give us a tag and let us know how you get on! 🐎
